It is true that in the United States starting to collect a Social Security benefit means having a minimum monthly income that helps pay all the usual expenses. However, that income does not always appear in the beneficiary’s checking account on the same day each month. While it is also true that on January 3rd the Administration will send out new checks, it is no less true that not all Americans will get these checks on that day.
In order to get these Social Security checks on January 3rd, there is one requirement that must be met. In addition, there is another requirement that is not 100% mandatory but makes it so that we get the check as soon as possible. This second requirement is the collection method and depending on which one we have activated we can get the money sooner or later.
Who gets Social Security on January 3rd?
The day Social Security is sent to each retiree is different depending on the group to which he/she belongs. On January 3rd, the payment is for group 1 retirees. This means that this group is the first to get the 2025 benefit with the Cost Of Living Adjustment fully updated and added.
Thus, to be part of retiree group 1 it is only necessary to meet one objective: to have the benefit since before May 1997. Any retiree who has had a check since before that year can enjoy his or her usual check on the 3rd day of each month, with some exceptions. And in January 2025 there will be no irregularities, so just meeting this requirement is enough.
On the other hand, in order to have the money on the same day of sending it is mandatory to have Direct Deposit activated. This collection method is immediate, which means that Americans who activate it will be able to have the money available as soon as the Social Security Administration sends it to their bank accounts.
Finally, it is good to remember that the first of these payments of the year will have the COLA included, so the Social Security check will not be the same as in 2024, but will increase a little. The maximum on these benefits will be $5,180, but that does not mean that all Americans will be able to get such a check.
