For United States citizens, sending all the Tax Return documentation to fulfill tax-related obligations is not the most fun task of their lives. However, it is true that it is advisable to do so in order to forget about any problems related to IRS fines or penalties.
And although it is true that sometimes we may find that we have difficulties when sending the Tax Return to the IRS, it is also true that we can find some free help that will make our obligations easier.
If you are eligible you could get help directly from the IRS to make it easier to send the Tax Return. If it is not possible to get this kind of help, it means that you will have to look for a payment professional to send the documents, although it is not mandatory, since you, if you know the system, can do it on your own.
Requirements for free IRS help
As a general rule we will find four options to apply for help in sending the Tax Return to the IRS. These four options are IRS Free File, Direct File, VITA and MilTax. Each has its own requirements and each has its own advantages.

Here are the requirements for each:
- IRS Free File: Individuals with income of $84,000 or less in the last year can use IRS Free File guided software for free until October 15. As part of this program, IRS Free File Fillable Forms are also available, which allow you to complete and e-file your return at no cost, regardless of income level.
- Direct File: Available in 25 states, Direct File allows taxpayers to file their federal income tax return directly with the IRS for free. This online service works on phones, computers and tablets, and is available in English and Spanish. The platform guides users step-by-step through the preparation of their federal return and redirects them to state tools if necessary. It also offers live assistance with IRS representatives via chat in English and Spanish. To check eligibility, you can visit directfile.irs.gov.
- Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA): The VITA program offers free help to taxpayers with incomes of $67,000 or less, people with disabilities and those who are not proficient in English. IRS-certified volunteers provide support in the preparation and electronic filing of basic tax returns. In addition, the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program provides specialized assistance to taxpayers, especially those over age 60, with a focus on pensions and retirement issues.
- MilTax: This Department of Defense program offers free attorney assistance to members of the armed forces and some veterans, with no income limit. It includes software for preparing and e-filing federal tax returns and up to three state returns at no cost.
If you have access to them you should make use of them, as they will make your life much easier in the sense that the IRS Tax Return is something you can’t forget and can’t miss.
