In the midst of so much economic uncertainty, the dream of a new stimulus check in the United States has once again caught the attention of thousands of people. And although the federal government has not confirmed any $800 payments for April 2025, there are states that are taking firm steps to help their citizens. One of them is Colorado, which through the TABOR program could grant considerable refunds next spring.
TABOR, which stands for Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights, has become a key tool for putting money back into taxpayers’ pockets when there are budget surpluses. On this occasion, the state plans to distribute nearly $1.4 billion, an amount representing the surplus for the 2024 fiscal year. This is news that not only gives hope, but also a much-needed respite for many families still struggling to recover from the toughest years of the pandemic.
Payments could reach as much as $1,600 for those filing jointly, a significant figure considering that it comes not from a federal fund, but from the state’s own financial balance. Of course, there are certain requirements that must be met and new rules that all interested parties should be aware of.
Who can get the TABOR refund in 2025?
The TABOR program no longer automatically provides refunds every year. Now, it is only activated if the state surplus is considered exceptionally high, as is the case in 2025. On this occasion, Colorado residents have access to two forms of help:
- Income tax reduction: All taxpayers who file their state return for the 2024 tax year will get a temporary reduction in the rate from 4.40% to 4.25%.
- Sales rebate: Those who have lived in Colorado throughout 2024 can access this payment if they file a state tax return or a PTC (Property/Rent/Heat Tax Rebate) application before October 15, 2025.
The amount each person gets will depend on their adjusted gross income and other factors as determined by the Colorado Department of Revenue. The maximum amount for those filing jointly is $1,600, while individuals filing separately would receive less.
To qualify for the TABOR rebate, you must meet the following three requirements:
- Have lived in Colorado for at least half of the 2024 tax year.
- Be at least 18 years of age as of January 1, 2025.
- File the 2024 state income tax return or apply for a personal tax credit by April 15, 2025.
The application must be made online, through the official website of the state Department of Revenue. There it is necessary to fill in the corresponding form, attach the requested documentation and verify that all the information is correct before sending it.
TABOR is, without a doubt, one of the most relevant state-level helps at the moment. And although it is no substitute for a federal check, for many it represents that little economic boost that can make a big difference.
