If you have a monthly SSDI benefit in the United States, you may have access to a different payment each month. Many Americans are eligible for an extra check of up to $943 and don’t even know it. This payment can make a big difference every month, as it provides a relatively large amount to help those most in need.
In addition, in some months we run into exceptions where we can get up to two checks of this benefit. Therefore, Americans on SSDI and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) can get three different payments in the same month. And that is precisely what happens in the month of May, since this month has a somewhat irregular calendar.
How can SSDI recipients get an extra payment in May?
The extra payment we are talking about is Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and not all SSDI recipients can get it. In addition to that, we should also keep in mind that only Americans who have applied for this check in advance will have access to it.
The monthly Supplemental Security Income benefits have two requirements. On the one hand, it is necessary to have a disability or to be 65 years old. It does not matter which of these categories is ours, as both are valid for this extra check.
In addition to that, SSI recipients must have low monthly income, as well as low resources in general. Therefore, SSDI recipients who have no other source of income could have access to the extra monthly check if they meet both requirements.
In that case, next May 31st will be the date when they can get this extra payment in this month. Only in the case that they meet all the named requirements and, in addition, they have requested the payment in advance.
If we do not have the payment accepted in advance we will have to wait for the Social Security Administration to agree to send us the check. Although it is true that the payment can be up to $943, each citizen gets a different amount. The exact amount depends directly on our monthly income.
The higher the income, the lower the Supplemental Security Income payment and vice versa. Since in most cases SSDI is not too large, it is possible for SSI recipients to get a high SSI that is close to the maximum check.
