While it is true that there are many United States citizens who collect a Social Security check, it is also true that not everyone gets a very large benefit. For that reason, it is good to be aware of all the extra benefits we can apply for to get a little money each month to supplement our regular income.
Thus, citizens who are eligible can opt to get a check of around $967 per month. It is true that this is the maximum amount, so it is not possible to always receive such a large check, although it is true that we could have a check that supplements Social Security whatever the final amount is.
Requirements for an extra check of $967 per month
As of January 2025 this check will have this maximum amount of $967 per month thanks to the COLA. In 2024 the payment has been $943 maximum, but this payment changes every year due to the Cost of Living adjustment. But the maximum payment is that and it is not possible to get, at least for individual beneficiaries, a higher payment.
The conditions to be able to claim this extra benefit, which is called Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are:
- Being 65 years of age or older. It is also possible to have this benefit if you have a disability regardless of age.
- Have low monthly income and low resources.
Both conditions are mandatory and must be proven. For this, it is best to have all the relevant documentation ready. In the case that we have the accepted benefit we will have to prove our monthly income, as well as other kinds of economic help.
It is true that as soon as we start collecting SSI we will be able to enjoy the check, but it is also possible to stop collecting it at some point. If we are no longer eligible, Social Security will stop paying us the check, so we will no longer have this extra monthly income.
The payment of this benefit arrives on the 1st of each month except in exceptional cases. If the 1st of the month is a holiday or weekend, the Social Security Administration sends a check on the immediately preceding business day.
