The Income or Tax Return, according to the institutions in charge of managing these matters, is an annual procedure that taxpayers must carry out to regularize their economic situation with the Tax Agency. It basically consists of calculating the total amount of taxes to be paid in a fiscal year. Therefore, the IRS, the United States Internal Revenue Service, has announced that it expects more than 140 million tax returns during the stipulated period for citizens to carry out this legal procedure with the Administration.
Although most taxpayers must file their forms before this deadline to avoid incurring fines and interest, there are relief provisions for individuals or groups who have recently suffered the effects of natural disasters, such as the DANA storm that hit the Community of Valencia, in Spain, at the end of 2024 or the recent one in Los Angeles. Therefore, according to the IRS agency itself, there is a specific period of time for citizens to file their tax returns on time without being penalized by the institutions.
US Tax Return Deadline
The US Internal Revenue Service has announced that it will begin accepting tax returns as of Monday, January 27. Therefore, from that date, taxpayers who so wish will be able to file their tax returns for the fiscal year to avoid problems with the administrations in charge of managing these matters. On the other hand, the agency has also stated that it expects more than 140 million individual tax returns to be filed by the deadline of Tuesday, April 15.
Therefore, it is confirmed that, for this occasion, the period of time that citizens will have to file their tax returns is between January 27 and April 15. Taxpayers who file outside this period or fail to file at all will have to explain themselves to the relevant authorities and may be subject to financial penalties, as required by US law.
Innovation in US Tax Returns
Similarly, the US Internal Revenue Service agency itself has announced a series of new and expanded programs for citizens to file their Income Tax Returns, designed to facilitate the tax return process as part of an effort at modernization initiated with the 2022 passage of the Inflation Reduction Act. This service innovation aims to improve the experience of paying taxes through better customer service options and expanded free resources.
In addition, the IRS has also launched a new update to its Free File program, which offers tax preparation software to eligible taxpayers free of charge. In other words, using this tool, citizens who so wish will be able to find out how much tax they will have to pay to the Tax Agency and also whether the return will be more or less favorable.
Finally, similar to third-party digital filing tools, Direct File allows taxpayers to automatically import data from their IRS account into the corresponding tax forms for free. However, with this new tool, taxpayers can submit their taxes directly to the IRS. This expansion includes the Direct File program for taxpayers in 25 states, up from 12 in last season’s pilot year.
